Some of you may know that along with having two level 80 Restoration Druids, I also have a freshly minted level 80 Retribution Paladin. I’ve been playing Fohrbin quite a bit recently and having a grand old time with him. The only issue I have with him, of course, is his gear. it’s horrible! Just plain horrible. So, How do I fix that? I look for gear lists.

Look. Brajana over at Mend Pet made a couple. but they haven’t been updated for 3.3, so… I make my own from sratch, not wanting to steal someone else’s work. These are going to work just like my Resto Druid lists, so here’s a reminder.
With the advent of patch 3.3 there are a whole crapload of new items and new ways to gear up your character. Being in a guild which mainly runs Heroic 5-mans, I figured the best path for me to get items is doing heroic random dailies to get A) Drops, B) Emblem drops, and C) Emblems of Frost from completing the Daily Random Heroic.

This gear list is basically for my benefit, and I’ve ignored paths which I will not be utilizing for gear progression. I have also by and large ignored items which have Defense on them, even if Rawr says they are good for DPS. Those are tanking items. don’t fight the tanks for gear. Tanks are our friends. I will not list PVP gear. I will not list 10-man gear. I will not list any gear which cannot be gotten from Heroics, Badges, the AH, or crafters. That said, This first post will be for Head, Chest, Shoulder, Wrist and Hands. Tomorrow’s list will cover the Waist, Legs, Feet, Back, and Neck. Wednesday will cover Rings, Librams, Trinkets, and Two-handed weapons.

As always, if you see something missing from my list, let me know what it is and where it comes from, and if it fits in with my progression, I’ll add it in.

Edit March 4 2010: This is now my most viewed Blog Post ever! Thanks for stopping by. I am Glad I could be of some assistance to all of the Ret Paladins out there.

The other day Pike posted this harrowing tale of Tree tanking on her 61 Resto Druid, and I thought it was quite interesting. So interesting that I had to join in the fun!

Here’s the setup: I queued for Normal Nexus to get my Winter hat, and the group got off to a pretty slow start. e, healing at level 80 with a Druid tank at 77 and dps ranging from 69-73. We made it through two pulls before the Druid tank had to AFK for dinner, while in the path of a patrol… Then the Rogue decided to scout ahead and got killed almost instantly by the patrol. Mage and DK ran away as fast as possible.

Meanwhile the Tank is still sitting in the path of the Patrol and starts taking hits. Knowing that I’m next in line when he dies, I tell the Mage and DK to come fight as I heal the bear.

That’s when it happens. Tree Tank! Healing Agro is strong in this one. I kept all three mobs on me, the Mage and DK killed the caster then the two hounds. I Resurrected the Rogue and we go back to waiting for the tank to get back online. It’s then that I look at the Damage Taken meter, you know, just for kicks.

I’ve been sitting on this post for a couple of days, not for any kind of respect for Bear or anything, but just for the fact that I am a bad Blogger.

I found proof that bacon is most likely the reason for the Big Bear Butt’s butt being so big. Straight from his wife…

bacon

Granted, this may not be full proof, but there’s a chance that I’m at least partially correct on this one.

I am now bracing for retaliation…

Last night I offered up my services in a Normal run of Forge of Souls and also the Pit of Saron as dun dun dunnnnnn…. deeps.

A few Guild members were running through and were looking in-guild before hitting the Pug button. As I had just finished(mostly) tweaking my UI, I decided to toss my cap in as either a healer or DPS, and BoomkekOwlbearLaserchicken it was.

I had previously gone through in Heroic mode on the PTR on one of the nights when you could pug with the blues, and once again friday evening as a healer so, I pretty much knew the place. I knew what not to do on the Bosses(thanks DBM) I knew the layout, and what the trash pulls looked like, so it was odd to me that after the third pull Bear offered me some advice.

I am paraphrasing, as I don’t recall what he said specifically, but he basically told me to “attack the skull you dummy.” In my defense, I was using my Focus frame to target Bear and the Focus Target to tell me what to kill before the skull appeared, but I was quite slow pulling off ad onto the skull when it popped up.

So, I am a nub, for not following one of the easiest concepts in the game. Follow the skull. I should get the “follow the skull” macro that my friend Drew had when he was raid leader for RD. It would put the skull on his target so the rest of the dps knew which target to focus fire on. Maybe I can give that to Bear.

Last night I hopped on Fohrbin again and popped into the random dungeon finder. after about 15 minutes, I got a group and ported into Oculus. Almost instantly the Tank and healer dropped group, so our DPS warrior switched himself to Tank and we rejoined the queue. Moments later a Shaman healer and a mage showed up and off we went.

For my first time in the instance, ever, it went pretty well. We had a death here or there, and onMage-Lort Urom we full wiped because it was 3 of our first time ever in the place and didn’t know about the teleport or the frost on the ground. Our overgeared Shaman healer told us to remember Sethekk Halls, and get behind a pillar when he ports. We pwned him.

We then got to the last boss. One Red drake. One green drake. Three amber drakes. Shaman of Pwn told us all what to do. and how to time it. OK. Sure. Got it.

77 Tank died with about 20% health left. I went next since my amber drake was kicking it’s ass. the other two amber drakes were next and then the healer, who almost beat the Dragon on his own from about 11%.  Next try we put the overgeared Shaman on the tanking drake and the 77 warrior stuck with his red drake as well. I continued to DPS and I guess it must have been my experience with EOE, because I found it all very easy and simple. We kicked that Dragon’s ass, and I finally got the Achievement for the Oculus. I even got a nice siny new DPS mace, which is pretty fail for Ret Pallies, but it’s more DPS than my old one, so I took it.

All in all, I’m not entirely sure WHY people didn’t like the place. Perhaps it is the fact that it got nerfed in 3.3, but I found that if you know the concepts, it is very very simple. I liked it and hope it comes up again in my randoms.

Tonight when I was finally able to log in I grabbed Fohrbin and signed up for Random Lich King Dungeons. Not Heroics, I still need work on my deeps before I go to heroics, so I chose random regulars.

The first one popped up about 4 seconds after I clicked OK, and off to Gun’Drak I was. I’ve been to a couple dungeons with the guild, who all knew how much I have NEVER played a DPS character before, ever, except for a BoomkekTurkeyOwlBearLaserchicken a few times. So I was pretty nervous getting in a PUG. I stopped being nervous because we all sucked. I think I pulled Aggro off the tank and died 4 times. I got 2 battle Rezes. It wound up being okay. nobody minded we roflstomped the place, and at the end four of us got the achievement for the place, myself included.

What did I learn? The random dungeon finder tool is cool.
I need to read up on bosses now to see what they do. Melee DPS needs to know when to run out.
I need to set up omen to warn me when I am about to pull aggro.
Ummmm. I still have no idea what I am doing as DPS.
